Philippians 4:13
"Si, se puede!" (Yes, it can be done or something close to that.)
This is the phrase of the afternoon as we entered into the village of the ancient pyramid. We had learned about these structures the day before at the museum. As we began to walk down the calle de muerte (street of the dead), we stopped off at the few smaller structures to climb the steps and peer over into the inside of the wall surrounding some area of significance for these ancient people. We imagined what life might have been like as we pictured the space before us. The view was pretty incredible until we realized at our far left was the Piramid del Sol (Pyramid of the Sun) and the Piramid de la Luna (Pyramid of the Moon). My immediate reaction to climbing the pyramids was "you've got to be kidding!" You could see people up on the top walking around and they looked like little ants marching. Being afraid of heights, I was not very interested in going up because the climb down would be incredibly frightening. However, the fear of missing out on something truly amazing was greater than not taking part in it at all. So, we started our journey up the pyramid. We got to the top and wow! was all I could say. The view was breathtaking and to think the structure we were standing on had been built some 5000 years ago was hard to take in. We celebrated our victory at the top with many pictures and then started down - which was not anywhere near as bad as I had expected. When we got to the bottom I was so excited about the climb up and what I had seen and experienced at the top.
This summer, there will be multiple climbing experiences, ones I can't wait to do and others that I wish didn't have to happen. Truthfully, I'm a little nervous about the "language" pyramid that stands before us. I know in some ways that learning the language will be a more difficult climb than making it to the top of the Pyramid of the Sun. But, as my dear friend April says, "poco a poco" (little by little). Just like we climbed the pyramid one level at a time, we'll learn the language one small level at a time.
